Many no load mutual funds offer many variety of services by mail or telephone. You can open an account with a mutual fund company that offers no load mutual funds and make periodic investment by mail, by phone, or electronically. It is common nowadays.

In your mutual fund research, you should choose a mutual fund company that offers the services you need. Not all mutual fund companies offer the same services. Some may not offer telephone trading service and some may not offer online investing. If telephone trading is important to you, be sure to inquire about it before you open an account with that mutual fund company. Some mutual fund companies move directly to electronic trading (online trading) and no longer offer telephone trading. Some mutual fund companies charge more for telephone trading, for example.

If after your mutual fund research, you decide to go with a full service brokerage house, bear in mind that they often are not 'full service' as their names suggest. Many full service brokerage firms have financial advisors. So, whenever  you want to trade, you can either do online trading or call your financial advisor to trade for you.
