What is the best way to find mutual fund performance?

In mutual fund research, you measure the mutual fund performance against an index. Since stock market index assess the up and down price movements of their component stocks, you can use them as a benchmark for measuring a mutual fund performance.

There are several stock market index but the three most widely used are the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), the Standard and Poor's 500 Index, and the NASDAQ (National Association of Security Dealers Automated Quotation System) Composite Index.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is probably the best known of all the stock market index, measuring general stock market price movements. The Dow Jones is called an average rather than a stock market index because no adjustment is made in the number of shares outstanding in its component stocks.

Some complaints have been directed at the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA). One is that the DJIA samples too small a percentage of the stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Although the sample includes about 25% of the total value of all stocks, the DJIA contains too many cyclical stocks and under represents growth stocks. Nevertheless, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is the main index most people use when referring to the stock market and when doing mutual fund research.
